A pleasant figure of eight walk combining forest, mountain views and riverside on the outskirts of Spean Bridge. Can also be started from Spean Bridge railway station.

Walk Description

Stage 1

Take the minor road that leaves Spean Bridge just south of the Spean Bridge Hotel and is signed for Coille Aonochain. Approximately 1km along this road there is a car park on the right hand side with a sign for Killiechonate Forest Trails. This walk is a figure of eight including the Eastern circular and Spean Bridge station. Start by heading up the track next to the parking area, passing through a gate and carrying on uphill.

Stage 2

The track climbs through birch and then pine trees before it reaches a four-way junction. Go straight across here onto a footpath, following the sign for the Courdale / Grey Corries and Circular Path; there are good views back across Glen Spean. Follow this through mixed woodland until another track is reached. Turn left here, signed for East Circular Path.

Stage 3

The track runs through the forestry plantations; there are good views across Glen Spean, but the Grey Corries range is now hidden by the growing trees. Look out for a footbridge on the left that indicates the start of a small path off - take this narrow path through the trees.

Stage 4

In the summer the sides of the path are a riot of pink and white foxgloves. After a small bridge the path emerges at a track, turn left here to continue downhill. Just as the gate to the road come into view below, turn left onto a level path at a bend, signed for East Circular and car park. This path crosses a small footbridge and passes through wonderful oak woodland.

Stage 5

Eventually it reaches the junction passed earlier on. This time go straight ahead, signed for Spean Bridge West circular path. Continue until a signed fork, then take the right option, signed for Spean Bridge Railway Station. This leads through birch woods before eventually reaching the Spean Bridge golf club car park. Bear right to cross the railway bridge, passing the attractive station building. Follow the road through the outskirts of Spean Bridge until a junction. Turn right here to follow the riverside road back to the car park.
