This very short walk climbs above Jura's tiny capital - Craighouse - to an informal viewpoint above the Bay of Small Isles.

Infrequent Jura bus service runs between Feolin Ferry and Ardlussa calls at Craighouse.

Walk Description

Stage 1

Craighouse - set on the Bay of Small Isles - is Jura's tiny capital, and the site of the island's only shop, cafe and hotel/pub - as well as the famed distillery. There is a parking area by the island community hall just north of the shop. Begin the walk by heading back along the road past the shop and cafe, forking left to pass the front of the hotel with its palm trees.

Stage 2

Beyond the hotel fork right onto a track between the fire station and a store. The track curves up, passing a bungalow. Immediately past the end of the fence of the bungalow's garden turn left onto a grassy path climbing up through the bracken. This forks but the branches rejoin, and it leads on through shrubby woodland and then up to reach a gate. Pass through this and then continue with the fence on your right.

Stage 3

At a corner in the fence follow the path which veers left, heading towards trees. It fords a small burn and then continues with a steep bank on your right, carpeted in bluebells in early summer. Keep ahead by the bank, eventually heading for a gap in the trees.

Stage 4

Head up the grassy pasture here towards the hill top. The viewpoint is informal - there is nothing to mark it - and there are actually two different views. Bear left, with two blocks of trees on your left, keeping above both sets of trees. The first viewpoint is across the Bay of Small Isles, and looks out along the line of islands that offer shelter to the bay. This view is becoming a little obscured by the tree growth ahead.

Stage 5

The second view is from the gap between the two bits of woodland, and is over Craighouse village with the Paps of Jura rising behind.

Stage 6

Return back down to the road in Craighouse in front of the fire station. Before heading back to the start, it is worth detouring to the end of the tarmac road to the right to visit the large jetty for a final view across the village.
