The Scottish National Trail route

A new website has just been launched to help promote the Scottish National Trail. The Trail – which was devised by outdoors broadcaster and writer Cameron McNeish and launched by First Minister Alex Salmond last year – runs for the length of Scotland, 864km from Kirk Yetholm to Cape Wrath.

“This trail has wonderful variety, ranging from easy but beautiful walking in the Borders and Central Scotland before becoming progressively more challenging through Perthshire and the Cairngorms to become a real backpacking adventure in the Northwest Highlands. We’re delighted to have completed a detailed guide and description to walking every stage of the route from the Borders to the far Northwest. Researching the length of the route has been a great adventure in itself.” said Paul Webster, co-founder of Walkhighlands.

“I think every walker should find at least a part of the route suits them. Many others will attempt the route a section at a time, joining together the pieces of a wonderful jigsaw – those doing this can mark their personal progress towards completion on the Walkhighlands map of the route. The hardiest and most intrepid may attempt the whole trail in a single journey – the walk of a lifetime.”

Walkhighlands has also today launched its guide to the classic backpackers’ route – The Cape Wrath Trail – that shares its northern section with the Scottish National Trail.
