{"id":10879,"date":"2014-05-13T14:23:30","date_gmt":"2014-05-13T14:23:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/?p=10879"},"modified":"2014-05-13T14:23:30","modified_gmt":"2014-05-13T14:23:30","slug":"sea-eagle-chicks-on-view-at-beinn-eighe-visitor-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/sea-eagle-chicks-on-view-at-beinn-eighe-visitor-centre\/","title":{"rendered":"Sea Eagle chicks on view at Beinn Eighe visitor centre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Visitors to the Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve visitor centre in Wester Ross will be treated to fantastic close up views of sea eagle chicks this summer.<br \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_10311\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/sea-eagle.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10311\" src=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/sea-eagle.jpg\" alt=\"Sea eagle\" width=\"650\" height=\"451\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/sea-eagle.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/sea-eagle-200x139.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/sea-eagle-390x271.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10311\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sea eagle<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nLocal staff have announced the successful hatching of a chick at the nest on Loch Maree Islands.<\/p>\n<p>It has been regularly used by the pair of eagles for the past 16 years, and last year Scottish Natural Heritage, which manages Britain\u2019s oldest NNR, installed a remote camera which sends live footage via radio signals to the visitor centre in nearby Kinlochewe.<\/p>\n<p>Eoghain Maclean, the reserve mamager, spotted the fluffy chick poking out above the nest cup, and breathed a sigh of relief: \u201cWe\u2019ve got to know these birds well over the years \u2013 they were both Norwegian chicks which were released in the area in the early 1990s as part of the reintroduction programme,\u201d he confirfmed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWeather can have a big impact at nesting time, so it\u2019s always a special moment when you actually see the chicks for the first time. It\u2019s a logistical challenge to bring the pictures in to the centre, but when you see the quality of the images it\u2019s well worth the effort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cameras will allow close views of the adults bringing in food for the chicks, and people will be able to monitor their progress as they grow, and hopefully fledge the nest in late summer. There are a number of walks at the reserve including the <a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/torridon\/Mountaintrail.shtml\">Beinn Eighe Mountain Trail<\/a>, <a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/torridon\/Woodlandtrail.shtml\">Woodland Trail<\/a>, the Corbett <a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/torridon\/Meallaghuibhais.shtml\">Meall a Ghiubhais<\/a> and a traverse of <a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/torridon\/Beinneighe.shtml\">Beinn Eighe<\/a> itself.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Visitors to the Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve visitor centre in Wester Ross will be treated to fantastic close up views of sea eagle chicks this summer.
