Road equivalent tariffs (RET) have been operational on routes to the Outer Hebrides, Coll and Tiree since 2008. Following the success of these routes, which coincided with a boom in tourism to the Outer Hebrides the scheme was rolled out to include Islay, Colonsay and Gigha in 2012 and Arran is set to be included later this year.<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/calmac.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/calmac.jpg\" alt=\"calmac\" width=\"345\" height=\"262\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/calmac.jpg 345w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/calmac-198x150.jpg 198w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 345px) 100vw, 345px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nAnnouncing the roll out to the remaining Clyde and Hebrides routes, Transport Minister Keith Brown said the roll out would involve a further 14 ferries including Mull, Barra, Skye and the Small Isles.<\/p>\n<p>The RET scheme links ferry fares to the cost of travelling the equivalent distance on land and covers fares for passengers, cars, small commercial vehicles and coaches, but not large lorries and other commercial vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>The Scottish government is advising tourism businesses to plan ahead to ensure local services can cope with the additional demand generated by extra visitors.
