When it comes to beaches, there is truly an unmatched range from tiny rocky coves to majestic windswept bays of perfect shell sand. There&#8217;s really far too much to cover in just one &#8216;Our picks&#8217; article, so here we look at the beaches of the West Highlands, from the Great Glen heading north to Durness. In further posts we take a look at the unmatched <a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/our-pick-scotlands-best-island-beaches\/0014634\/\">beaches of the Scottish islands<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/our-pick-scotlands-east-coast-beaches\/0015893\/\">best beaches of Eastern Scotland<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sanna Bay, Ardnamurchan<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/DSCF4981-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/DSCF4981-800x533.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/DSCF4981-320x213.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/DSCF4981-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/DSCF4981.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>The Ardnamurchan peninsula &#8211; the westernmost part of mainland Britain &#8211; has several beaches that are well worth a visit, including the <a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/fortwilliam\/singingsands.shtml\">Singing Sands<\/a> near Kentra, but to reach the finest means heading right out to <a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/fortwilliam\/sanna.shtml\">Sanna Bay<\/a> near <a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/fortwilliam\/ardnamurchanpoint.shtml\">Ardnamurchan Point<\/a>. The beautiful shell sand here is fringed by rocks and dunes, and offers great views out towards the Small Isles on a clear day. The photo above shows Applecross Beach itself, but there is also a wonderful beach at <a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/torridon\/Sandapplecross.shtml\">Sand<\/a> to the north, a pair of <a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/torridon\/Coralbeach.shtml\">Coral beaches<\/a>, and a little visited stretch of sand at <a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/torridon\/Cuaig.shtml\">Cuaig<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Red Point<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"501\" src=\"https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/DSCF4459-800x501.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25396\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/DSCF4459-800x501.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/DSCF4459-320x200.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/DSCF4459-200x125.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/DSCF4459.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>There are two magnificent beaches either side of the <a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/torridon\/Redpoint.shtml\">Red Point<\/a> peninsula, reached via a long road from near Gairloch, or a <a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/torridon\/Redpointcraig.shtml\">coastal walk<\/a> from Diabaig near Torridon, via Craig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gaineamh Mhor, Gairloch<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"535\" src=\"https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/gairloch-800x535.jpg\" alt=\"gairloch\" class=\"wp-image-12999\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/gairloch-800x535.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/gairloch-200x134.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/gairloch-390x261.jpg 390w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/gairloch.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>We&#8217;re now into another of the west coast&#8217;s &#8216;beach hotspots&#8217; &#8211; the area around the village of Gairloch. <a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/torridon\/gairloch-beach.shtml\">Gaineamh Mhor<\/a> lies just south of the village, and has a unspoilt backdrop to the Torridon mountains. There is another equally fine beach at Sand on the road towards Melvaig, whereas the dramatic beach of <a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/torridon\/rubha-reidh.shtml\">Camas Mor<\/a> &#8211; backed by cliffs &#8211; can be hiked by the more adventurous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mellon Udrigle<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/DSCF2155-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/DSCF2155-800x533.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/DSCF2155-320x213.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/DSCF2155-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/DSCF2155.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/torridon\/mellonudrigle.shtml\">Mellon Udrigle<\/a> is unusual in that it faces east, enjoying shelter from the prevailing winds and an outlook to the Summer Isles, <a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/ullapool\/ben-more-coigach.shtml\">Ben More Coigach<\/a> and <a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/ullapool\/anteallach.shtml\">An Teallach<\/a>. It is much favoured by photographers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gruinard Bay<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"535\" src=\"https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/gruinard-bay-800x535.jpg\" alt=\"gruinard-bay\" class=\"wp-image-13000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/gruinard-bay-800x535.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/gruinard-bay-200x134.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/gruinard-bay-390x261.jpg 390w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/gruinard-bay.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>The picturesque <a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/torridon\/gruinardbay.shtml\">Gruinard Bay<\/a> may seem like a perfect escape from the world, but the island offshore tells a dark story. It may seem a long way to go, but those who make the effort are well rewarded as this area has surely the best collection of beaches on the UK mainland. A <a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/sutherland\/oldshoremore-bay.shtml\">short but rugged walk<\/a> from here leads past three more sandy beaches &#8211; Bagh a&#8217;Phollain, Port Chaligag and Bagh Sheigra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sandwood Bay<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"535\" src=\"https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/sandwood-800x535.jpg\" alt=\"sandwood\" class=\"wp-image-13004\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/sandwood-800x535.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/sandwood-200x134.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/sandwood-390x261.jpg 390w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/sandwood.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>You didn&#8217;t think we&#8217;d omit this one, did you? <a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/sutherland\/sandwood-bay.shtml\">Sandwood Bay<\/a> may require an eight mile round-trip walk to visit, but its reputation has grown over the years and many people have claimed it to be Britain&#8217;s finest beach. More than a mile of perfect sand is backed by dunes and a loch, whilst at the southern end of the bay the <a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/our-pick-scotlands-great-sea-stacks\/0012781\/\">great sea stack of Am Buachaille<\/a> &#8211; the herdsman &#8211; guards the bay. The bay is a place of legends, with stories of hauntings and sightings of mermaids. These days it is a popular place for wild-camping &#8211; a great experience, but do remember to leave it as clean as you found it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Balnakeil Bay<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/fair-isle-86-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27579\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/fair-isle-86-800x533.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/fair-isle-86-320x213.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/fair-isle-86-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/fair-isle-86-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/fair-isle-86.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>From Sandwood the cliffs lead on to Cape Wrath and round to Kearvaig &#8211; another stunning bay. Our next pick though is a little further east. Balnakeil Bay &#8211; seen here being enjoyed by its herd of cows &#8211; is a stunning spot, and forms part of the wonderful short walk around <a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/sutherland\/faraid-head.shtml\">Faraid Head<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sango Sands<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" src=\"https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/sango-sands-800x534.jpg\" alt=\"sango-sands\" class=\"wp-image-13005\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/sango-sands-800x534.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/sango-sands-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/sango-sands-390x260.jpg 390w, https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/sango-sands.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Our final beach in this selection is Sango Bay. There are two superb beaches here, either side of the headland on the Sango Sands campsite at <a href=\"\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/sutherland\/durness.shtml\">Durness<\/a>. The eastern beach is more accessible and is made striking by its great jagged rocks.
