Many of you will have watched the Adventure Show Special programmes, Roads Less Travelled: The West Highlands, presented by Cameron McNeish<\/a>. The programmes are currently still available on the BBC iplayer<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Aird of Sleat, Isle of Skye<\/h3>\n

\nThe second episode began on the Isle of Skye<\/a>, with Cameron travelling to the Aird of Sleat and cycling the track down towards the Point of Sleat<\/a> – before wildcamping nearby.<\/p>\n

Kylerhea – Glenelg ferry<\/h3>\n

\"Kylerhea<\/a>
\nCameron took his campervan back to the mainland by using the tiny Glenachulish turntable ferry across the narrows of Kylerhea. The jetty is the start point for a grand walk on the Kintail side, around Ardintoul Point<\/a>, whilst the Skye side of the ferry is near the entrance to the Kylerhea Otter Haven<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Bealach na Sgairne, Kintail<\/h3>\n

\"Bealach<\/a>
\nCameron met up with Kintail NTS Ranger Willie Fraser for a walk from Morvich up to the dramatic and narrow pass of the Bealach na Sgairne<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Loch Maree<\/h3>\n

\nIt was back to the packraft<\/a> for a visit to Loch Maree, renowned as being amongst Scotland’s most beautiful lochs. Cameron visited the intriguing Isle Maree (see David Lintern’s recent article<\/a>); landlubbers may have to make do with a walk around the Woodland Trail<\/a> on the shores, or the through walk from Tollie to Slattadale<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Craig from Diabaig, near Torridon<\/h3>\n

\nThe visit to Torridon began from the picturesque hamlet of Diabaig, and followed the coastal path to the former youth hostel at Craig<\/a>, which is now a bothy. Cameron was accompanied by Lord Chris Smith who was once the warden at the hostel. The walk can be continued through to Red Point<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Melvaig Peninsula, near Gairloch<\/h3>\n

\nCameron joined up with a local Gaelic scholar to learn about placenames on a visit to the Melvaig Peninsula and Rubha (Rua) Reidh<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Gruinard Bay and Island<\/h3>\n

\nTravelling further round the coast Cameron reached Gruinard and its beautiful bay<\/a>, looking across to the island which was deliberately contaminated by anthrax and only recently cleaned up.<\/p>\n

Ullapool Hill<\/h3>\n

\nThe programme concluded in the town of Ullapool<\/a>, capital of the Northwest Highlands. Cameron worked off his fish and chips with the short ascent of Ullapool Hill<\/a> which has great views over the town.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
