{"id":26630,"date":"2023-01-17T15:30:28","date_gmt":"2023-01-17T15:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/?p=26630"},"modified":"2023-01-17T15:30:30","modified_gmt":"2023-01-17T15:30:30","slug":"safety-experts-issue-phone-navigation-advice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.walkhighlands.co.uk\/news\/safety-experts-issue-phone-navigation-advice\/","title":{"rendered":"Safety experts issue phone navigation advice"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"E390\">Following the results of a survey, Mountaineering Scotland have launched new guidance for those who use their phones, or GPS devices, for navigating in the hills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"E410\">As part of the survey, some 4,000 hill users were asked if they used mobile phones or GPS for navigating when spending time in the hills and mountains, and if they had experienced any issues while doing this. A huge 87% of people said they used an electronic device for navigating at some point on their walk, and 40% of those said they had experienced a situation where their device had stopped working in some way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"E425\">Based on the results, Mountaineering Scotland have put together five simple steps to help keep your mobile phone and GPS working for when you\u2019re using it for in the hills:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"E446\"><strong>CHARGE<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>\u2013 start with 100% battery charge and charge your device while you travel if you\u2019re using it for music or road navigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"E451\"><strong>PROTECT<\/strong> \u2013 protect your phone from the elements and keep it close to your body when not in use to help it stay warm and dry and save battery life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"E458\"><strong>DOWNLOAD<\/strong> \u2013 download all the maps you might need so you don\u2019t need to rely on mobile data to be able to access maps on your walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"E464\"><strong>EXTEND<\/strong> &#8211; Switching your phone to \u2018Flight Mode\u2019 makes your battery last a lot longer and take a fully charged power bank to re-charge on the go if needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"E467\"><strong>TAKE A BACKUP<\/strong> \u2013 If your phone or GPS fails, you\u2019ll need another way to navigate, for example a map and compass, and the ability to use them effectively.
