Minister praises impact of \u201cworld famous\u201d Land Reform Act 2003<\/strong>   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Environment Minister M\u00e0iri McAllan joined well-known faces from across the outdoors community at Holyrood last night to celebrate 20 years of the nation\u2019s world-class access rights.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ramblers Scotland\u2019s #OutdoorsForAll event marked two decades of the pioneering Land Reform Act 2003 giving the public the legal right to access nearly all land and inland water in Scotland, provided they behave responsibly.  <\/p>\n\n\n

Attendees included many of the original campaigners from Ramblers Scotland and partners organisations who fought hard to win the rights, which are often known as the \u2018right to roam\u2019.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guests included Ramblers Scotland\u2019s president, mountain leader Lucy Wallace, and the charity\u2019s former presidents including former politician Dennis Canavan and naturalist Ben Dolphin.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Environment Minister M\u00e0iri McAllan said: \u201cScotland\u2019s landscapes are world famous – so too is our right to responsibly access them.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are so many benefits to spending time walking in our parks, woodlands and hills, including improving our physical health, nurturing mental well-being, tackling loneliness and many more. We should all be able to access these benefits and our world leading rights provide this.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGoing forward, we must prioritise action to address the barriers and challenges that some still face in accessing the outdoors. No-one should be prevented from benefiting because of their circumstances.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRamblers Scotland members played a leading role in campaigning for Scotland\u2019s access rights and now much of their work is focussed on upholding them. I wish to send my thanks to them and all of their volunteers for their time, commitment and enthusiasm for countryside access – enthusiasm which I wholeheartedly share.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The #OutdoorsForAll event was hosted by Highlands and Islands MSP Ariane Burgess, who has received cross-party support for her Motion calling for \u201cfunding for access management, ranger services and local access forums\u201d. Ramblers Scotland director Brendan Paddy highlighted how recent Scottish Government natural capital accounts place the value of \u00a362 billion on outdoor recreation alone, which is greater than the oil and gas sector.<\/p>\n\n\n

Mr Paddy said: \u201cThe Land Reform Act 2003 is one of the stand-out achievements of Scotland\u2019s devolved parliament, with our world-class access rights forming a cherished element of our national identity. The Act has delivered so much for the nation\u2019s health, happiness and economy in the past 20 years, with booming numbers of people accessing our outdoors.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added: \u201cThis month\u2019s anniversary also provides a useful moment to reflect upon how access to the outdoors remains unequal, with people in affluent areas considerably more likely to walk than those in deprived parts of Scotland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI hope that in the years ahead we focus even greater effort and resources upon ensuring that everyone – whatever their background, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, ability or age – benefits from Scotland’s amazing outdoors.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scottish access rights apply equally to anyone travelling under their own steam, including walkers, cyclists, climbers, canoeists, swimmers, horse riders, paddle-boarders and others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 was passed by MSPs on 23 January 2003 and given Royal Assent on 25 February 2003. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
