Goatfell, from Corrie

This alternative route to the summit of Arran's highest peak is quieter than the Brodick approach, but also rougher and wetter. It does make it possible to include North Goatfell in a circular route for the more experienced.

Short section of metalled road, rocky mountain footpaths. Scrambling and steep ground on narrow ridge (with bypass path to avoid most of the scrambling) then steep initial descent.

Walk Description

Stage 1

A sign alongside the road indicates the correct lane which branches west from the A841 at the southern end of Corrie. There is some limited parking up the lane and further spaces to the north in Corrie itself. Proceed up the lane until a junction, then take the left-hand fork, passing a seriously distressed tree stump overshadowing a wooden painted 'Goatfell' sign and continue as the metalled road turns into aggregate track. Watch out for the signposted junction indicating a smaller track exiting to the right. Follow this often very muddy path until it exits the woodland at a deer gate.

Stage 2

Beyond is a well maintained - but rough - path running above Corrie Burn and associated waterfalls. Follow the path but watch for a ford across the river as it narrows level with the eastern extremity of Meall Breac - cross this and head up the path onto the ridge. Follow the obvious path(s) through the boulders - you may need to use your hands in places - until the junction with the 'Goatfell tourist route' from Brodick is reached. Continue straight ahead with the summit firmly in sight and begin the steep final ascent.

Stage 3

Perseverance is rewarded with spectacular views over the surrounding ridges and peaks, across the Clyde estuary and to Ireland on a clear day. The easiest return to Corrie is to retrace your steps, but a rougher alternative is possible. This heads along the very rocky north ridge; there are various granite tors and obstacles that may attract scramblers. These can be bypassed using paths on the east side. A very steep ascent then leads up to North Goatfell (though this too can be passed on the right).

Stage 4

At this point the ridge divides and one arm decends steeply to the saddle below dramatic Cir Mhor. Our route, however, continues along the northeast ridge until the bealach below Mullach Buidhe. From here it is possible to descend with care down the steep, mostly grassy slopes into Coire Lan. Further down the corrie a path is joined which soon links up with the outward route. Retrace your steps from here back down to the start.
