This short circular walk follows the River Esk upstream from Langholm before returning on tracks and minor roads.

Start from the Kilngreen car park adjacent to the River Esk, on the A7 just north of the town centre. Walk back along the main road towards the town and turn right over the bridge on Thomas Telford Road. Continue ahead along the road, passing the Buccleuch Centre (an arts venue) and then the school, Langholm Academy.
Continue along the road beside the playing fields; just after the speed limit sign turn right through a gap in the railings down some steps. Bear left along the edge of the playing fields, then follow a path along the far side of the big stone wall. The path soon reaches the riverbank; head left here, following the River Esk upstream.
Cross the attractive arched Duchess' Bridge and turn left on the far side to continue upstream. The route leads through a gate and continues through the fine woodland lining the river.
When the route forks keep to the higher, right hand track. This soon bends to the right, keeping the pheasant rearing area on your right. Keep straight ahead at a cross-tracks, passing to the right of a flat-topped brick building. Follow the track which curves round the northern side of the pheasant-rearing fields.
The track - now tarred - offers views across the fields towards Mid Hill. After a large house turn right onto a minor road. This leads past the Clan Armstrong and then a gatehouse. Keep ahead, crossing an old hump-backed bridge to return to the car park at the start of the walk.
