Corrieshalloch Gorge

DUNDONNELL AND ULLAPOOL

Test your head for heights on the bridge and new viewing platform over the dramatic gorge while the water surges many metres below your feet. The surrounding walk has spectacular views of waterfalls and the open countryside towards Loch Broom. NB: The bridge is due to close for repairs in the winter 2011/12 when there will also be no access to the viewing platform.

Summary

Clear paths, steep in sections, the second half of the walk is accessible for wheelchair users and buggies.

1. From the car park turn right through the gate to head down the shortest route to the bridge. The path takes a couple of zig zags to arrive at the bridge over the narrowest point of the gorge. The bridge is supposed to only hold six people at a time. After crossing the bridge turn left and follow the path to where a metal viewing platform juts out over the gorge giving vertigo-inducing views of the bridge and gorge.

2. Return to the bridge and cross to the other side. Turn right and follow the path as it skirts the edge of the gorge. Take great care to stay on the path here as the gorge sides are unstable.

3. Through the trees you can see the viewing platform on the opposite side. The path passes through pines and then heads downhill on some steps to an information area and then a further viewing area for the gorge. This place is the end of the accessible walk coming in the opposite direction.

4. Keep following the path as it turns uphill and into open countryside. There are great views down towards Loch Broom to the right. At the top of the uphill section there is a seat cleverly crafted from a tree trunk. Follow the level path to return to the car park.
