Walk Description

Stage 1

The walk starts at the Tourist Information Centre on Atholl Road in the centre of Pitlochry. There is a car park next door, alternatively you can park at Black Spout Woods and join the walk a little further on by following the A924 and turning left after the Blair Athol distillery. If walking from the town centre, follow the main road towards Dunkeld soon passing under the railway line where you have to cross to the right side to take the underpass. After crossing back you pass the Blair Atholl distillery, home of Bells Whisky.

Stage 2

After passing a row of bungalows turn left uphill signed for Black Spout Wood, passing under the railway again. You soon reach the car park for the woods where you keep to the track to the left which climbs gently through the woodland, the Atholl Palace Hotel golf course on your left. At a crossroads follow the yellow marker for Edradour straight across and continue to the Black Spout viewpoint. The waterfall is over sixty metres high and can look very impressive after heavy rainfall.

Stage 3

Keep following the footpath as it winds uphill keeping right at a fork and following the yellow marker posts. The path then follows the edge of farm fields between two drystone walls. Good views of Ben Vrakie can be seen to the left. As the walk approaches Edradour it passes a stone cottage and emerges at the pretty distillery where tours are available during the summer. Here turn left onto the road and climb out of the hamlet and follow the road for a short distance until you reach a farm gate on your left just before a set of ornamental stone gate posts. Here follow the marked and enclosed path as it skirts the edge of the field and then heads downhill passed a new house with good views over Pitlochry.

Stage 4

The path meets a grassy track and turns left onto it signposted for Pitlochry. The path continues to a house where it passes through a kissing gate back into Black Spout Wood. Soon the path meets a larger track where you turn right downhill ignoring the slightly earlier path for Milton. Soon, at a wide bend, take the path branching off to the right following a yellow marker signed for Pitlochry. The path continues until it crosses a wooden bridge and turns left following the Kinnaird Burn. Ignore the path up to the right which leads to the Atholl Palace Hotel.

Stage 5

At the next junction, marked by a large triangular stone, continue to the right, ignoring the optional riverside loop to the left. At the next junction also keep right. The path soon emerges at the road where you turn left and descend to the A924 passing the entrance to the Atholl Palace Hotel. Continue right on the main road and return to the centre of Pitlochry.
