Bridge over the Atlantic circuit, Seil

Summary

This enjoyable circuit heads from the Bridge over the Atlantic at the north end of Seil to the delightful Phuilladobhrain Anchorage, a good place for birdwatching and otter spotting. This is then followed by a rougher coastal walk (difficult at highest tides) to Camuslaich before returning by the road.

Stage 1

Having crossed the old, humpbacked Clachan Bridge (often called the Bridge over the Atlantic) onto Seil, begin the the walk by following the track to the right of the Tigh na Truish Inn signed for Puilladobhain Anchorage. Keep left to stay on the track at first before very soon turning right onto a narrow footpath and heading through a farm gate.

Stage 2

Cross the open ground ahead on the clear grassy path and keep ahead to descend fairly steeply towards the shore with the mountains of Mull visible in the distance across the water. Phuilladobhrain anchorage (meaning 'pool of the otters') is soon reached. This is a lovely spot to explore (you can detour to the right along a boggy path) and watch herons fishing and possibly spot an otter. The route turns left at the signpost to head southwest along the shore.

Stage 3

There is a faint path just above the high tide mark (at the very highest tides this section may be impassable) just keep following the shoreline before following the path to slightly higher ground and then through tussocky grass still following the coast.

Stage 4

Bear inland at a fence to reach a wooden farm gate. Fence has been replaced - there is now no gate - so continuing would require carefully crossing the fence. Beyond the fence the circuit becomes wetter underfoot for a section - you can avoid this and make a much shorter walk by heading uphill here keeping to the left of the rock wall to eventually pick up a track leading back to Clachan Bridge. To continue the circuit go through the gate and follow the shore above the tide line crossing an old stone wall and continuing towards the buildings at Camuslaich.

Stage 5

At the end of the shore take a grassy track up towards the left of the outbuildings and head left (away from the house on the far side) and then right to follow the main track which soon leads to the road from Ardencaple.

Stage 6

At the road turn left climbing uphill at first and keeping left to stay on the road at Oban Seil Farm to soon reach the B844. Turn left here and past the cottages at Clachan Seil to return to the start.
