Craignish Point, near Ardfern

Summary

A short coastal walk to Craignish Point overlooking the Sound of Jura, Scarba and the Corryvreckan whirlpool. A good place for otter spotting or to watch the sunset.

None to start. The road from Ardfern (bus stop) is quiet and would make a pleasant start to a much longer walk. .

Stage 1

Start from the car park just beyond the end of the B8002 south of Ardfern - go through the farm gate and along the road ahead to reach the car park. Alternatively the walk along the road from Ardfern is very pleasant with sea views and a good view of Craignish Castle on the way. From the far end of the car park walk down towards the jetty and turn left after the building to pick up a rough and indistinct path.

Stage 2

The path crosses rocky ground before reaching a fence - you may have to head up to the left (west) to go through a gap in the fence before continuing south east on a faint path keeping to the left (west) of a raised area and crossing a number of boggy areas. This site is a habitat for the rare marsh fritillary butterfly and walkers are asked to try and keep to a single route so as not to disturb breeding sites.

Stage 3

The path becomes clearer as it heads towards the point, keeping closer to the coast and traversing the hillside. The island of Scarba to the north of Jura can be seen well from here, uninhabited since the 1960s it is used for deer stalking and grazing livestock.

Stage 4

The path moves away from the coast and soon Craignish Point comes into view, the boggy ground in the dip near the sea can be avoided by keeping left (east) and soon the rocky point itself is reached. From here it is sometimes possible to see the standing wave of the Corryvreckan whirlpool or at least the turbulent water between Scarba and Jura, binoculars are useful for a better view.

Stage 5

Return to the car park by the same outward route keeping an eye out for otters which can be spotted in the waters here.
