A beautiful stretch of the River Tweed - marking the boundary between Scotland and England - begins this walk, heading upstream from Norham Bridge through into the Milne Graden Estate. The return follows country roads.

The walk begins from a small parking area on the north (Scottish) side of Norham Bridge. Dating back to 1895, the bridge replaced an earlier wooden one. Follow the path (signed for Milne Graden) down steps opposite the cottage - with great views of the bridge - and continue following the path upstream, soon passing a bench.
Pass through a gate, soon reaching an attractive stone-built fishing bothy. The Tweed is legendary amongst salmon fishermen, but you may also see heron or a variety of ducks. Continue, soon passing through another gate, then bear left along the track with the river to your left and a substantial stone wall on your right.
Go through another gate, and pass another fishing bothy. The route narrows between a wall and the river, and after another gate (with stile) it reaches a section with low overhanding cliffs sheltering an attractively situated bench. After yet another bothy - this time brick-built - go left through a gate to leave a track and keep to the grassy river bank. A long wooden footbridge over a minor tributary leads into a wide field with a circular stone folly.
At another gate the riverbank becomes wooded once more. There's a footbridge over another tributary, some steps and then a descent on a wooden boardwalk. Pass through a gap in a stone wall; you'll spot Milne Graden house up to your right. Cross a stone bridge and join a track, passing a riverside cottage. A gate leads into a grassy field. At the woodland pass through a gate and squeeze up steps, soon reaching the tarmac road.
To avoid the road walking you could simply retrace steps from here, but traffic is light. To begin the road walk back turn right. The road is part of the Tweed Cycleway. After 1km the road bends right, then later veers left again; it passes several fine gateways, one topped by a lion.
After a further 600m turn right at a road junction signed for Ladykirk and Upsettlington. This narrower road is followed for 1.4km to Ladykirk Home Farm; turn left here at another junction. Continue for a further kilometre to a crossroads, and turn right here to head back to the start.
