Summary

A two kilometre long sweep of the finest sand, Machir Bay is perhaps the most beautiful of Islay's many beaches. This straightforward walk explores the length of the bay.

Stage 1

There is a parking area at the end of the track above the beach, near Kilchoman. It is well worth visiting the graveyard of the ruined church en route to see the beautiful Kilchoman carved Celtic Cross. To begin the walk from the beach parking area take the path from the far end of the parking area (not the gate) and soon cross a bridge. The path leads down onto the extensive sands of Machir Bay.

Stage 2

Turn left and head along the beach. Facing due west and open to the wild waves of the Atlantic Ocean, Machir Bay has a history of shipwrecks. In the 1800s 2 large cargo boats ran aground here with the loss of 3 crew, the remains of a wooden hull can still be seen at low tide. In 1918 a navigation error caused the US troop carrier HMS Otranto to collide with HMS Kashmir in 1918 towards the end of WW1. It is estimated that 470 men died, some of whom are buried at Kilchoman military cemetery and the American Monument at the Oa was erected to commemorate this and another naval disaster.

Stage 3

Continue along the beach for just over 1km - at low tides some stunning rock pools can be seen on the southern section of the beach. Near the far end of the bay look out for a wide path ahead, climbing up a rocky ramp. Take this to head up a grassy track which very soon reaches a gate.

Stage 4

Go through this and turn left to climb uphill (a right turn would lead through to Kilchiaran, a lovely linear walk if transport can be arranged).

Stage 5

Follow the grassy track inland, watching out for eagles that are regularly spotted here. The track becomes fainter but keeps to the seaward (left) side of a small loch which can dry up in the summer months. After this pass through a gate with a stile to the left and continue on the main track (it's an official Council Core Path despite the discouraging signs) to return to a pedestrian gate at the parking area.
