A 2km sweep of the finest sand, Machir Bay must rank amongst Islay's most beautiful beaches. This straightforward walk explores the length of the bay.

Walk Description

Stage 1

There is a parking area at the end of the track above the beach, near Kilchoman. It is well worth visiting the graveyard of the ruined church en route to see the beautiful Kilchoman carved Celtic Cross. To begin the walk from the beach parking area, head through the gate next to an information board onto a track.

Stage 2

The track passes to the east of a boggy hollow and eventually becomes a path.

Stage 3

Eventually the path gives views over the southern end of Machir Bay, and if followed leads through to Kilchiaran. Continue along it until a gate and stile on the right; cross this and then head down to the beach.

Stage 4

Machir Bay is must rank amongst the very finest beaches on Islay, 2km of perfect sand. Head northwards along the beach for a little over 1km, until an obvious break in the dunes on the right. Head inland at this point, soon picking up a path that leads back to the parking area at the start.
