Stage 1

There is street parking in several places in Portnahaven, but to reach the parking area at the start of the walk turn left just past the speed limit sign as you drive into the village, passing the old school and soon reaching Port Wemyss. Turn right here, leaving the houses and reaching a parking area where the road turns to the right. Begin the walk from here by heading back along the road towards Port Wemyss. The Rhinns lighthouse can be seen on the small isle of Orsay to the right.

Stage 2

Turn right onto the Port Wemyss coastal path opposite Burnside Lodge (which serves tea and cakes). This well-made footpath leads round close by the shore below the village of Port Wemyss. Keep right at a junction to descend a slip, then left to continue the coastal path. The path finally leads up to the corner at the southern end of the village. Turn right along the road, then right again at the junction where you drove into Port Wemyss. Follow the road up out of the village, passing the old school just before reaching the A847 at a t-junction.

Stage 3

Turn left here, passing the Rhinns Community hall and continuing towards Portnahaven. Keep straight ahead at the junction with a great view over the bay at the heart of the village. Pass the church and continue heading downhill through the village to reach the An Tigh Seinnse pub on the corner at the bottom.

Stage 4

Turn left at the pub to head along past the cottages facing the bay. As height is gained there is a classic view back across the village. Pass the post office before turning right to head along the line past the cottages on the other side of the bay.

Stage 5

The street appears to be a block end, but if you head through the gate a rough path leads on ahead to join a lane above the small jetty. Turn left here to follow the road back to the parking area.
