Stage 1

There is street parking in several places in Portnahaven, but to reach the parking area at the start of the walk turn left just past the speed limit sign as you drive into the village, passing the old school and soon reaching Port Wemyss. Turn right here, passing the houses and reaching a parking area (with recycling bins) where the road turns to the right. Begin the walk from here by heading back along the road towards Port Wemyss. The Rhinns lighthouse can be seen on the small isle of Orsay to the right.

Stage 2

Turn right onto the Port Wemyss coastal path just before Burnside Lodge. This well-made footpath soon bears left (don't descend to the slipway) to keep above the shore and passes below the village of Port Wemyss. Look out for seals in the water or on the rocky shore of Orsay. At a junction turn right to descend towards a slipway but turn left before this to continue the coastal path.

Stage 3

The path finally leads up to the corner at the southern end of the village. Turn right along the road, then keep right when the road joins the road into Port Wemyss. Follow this road up out of the village, passing the old school just before reaching the A847 at a T-junction. Turn left here, passing the Rhinns Community hall and continuing towards Portnahaven. Keep straight ahead at the junction with a great view over the bay at the heart of the village.

Stage 4

Pass the church and continue heading downhill through the village to reach the corner with the An Tigh Seinnse pub just in on the right. Turn left here to head along past the cottages facing the bay. As height is gained there is a classic view back across the village. Pass the post box before turning right to head past the "no thru road" sign and past the cottages on the other side of the bay.

Stage 5

The street appears to be a block end, but if you continue ahead beyond the last house (don't turn up to the left) through a narrow gateway there is a rough path which leads over grassy ground and down steps to a lane giving access to a jetty. Turn left to head past a boat yard and uphill past the entrance to a house to return to the parking area.
