Rob Roy Way: Callander to Strathyre

Summary

This part of the Rob Roy Way heads out of Callander, passing through a forested section to reach the shores of Loch Lubnaig. It then continues by the loch before eventually reaching the village of Strathyre. The route follows a well-made cycle path throughout and you can detour to visit the Falls of Leny.

Stage 1

This stage starts from the Meadows car park; this is signed from the main street and can be reached on foot from the centre of Callander by walking west (towards Tesco, Mhòr Bread and Kilmahog) and then turning down Bridge Street. Then take the first right and follow the short path to the riverside. From the car park walk to the riverside where there is a good view of the bridge and often people fishing or feeding the ducks. Facing the river, turn right and follow the riverside path for a very short distance until the bend in the river where you head slightly right to follow the cycle track across the park.

Stage 2

Head straight across the park to the far corner, passing a couple of old railway signals (a hoop and a cross) near a large fir tree. At the corner of the park the track reaches a junction. Turn left to pass through an avenue of trees and then cross a bridge and continue along the cycle track across farmland. There are good views of Ben Ledi ahead and of the Crags above Callander. Where the cycle track passes a farm road go straight ahead. Eventually the path goes under a bridge and crosses a minor road to go through a gate and continue on the straight path through the trees. Keep following this track for almost 2 km until a rectangular concrete seat is reached and a junction in the path.

Stage 3

The Falls of Leny can be visited by a short detour to the right at this point (only very faint paths through thick undergrowth) - take extreme care near the steep edges. Return to the cycle path and continue along it, soon reaching the car park for Ben Ledi. Continue through this and along a track to meet the access road. Go straight across this, taking the tarred track signed for Strathyre forest village. Continue along this track, with good views over the river and later Loch Lubnaig to the right.

Stage 4

At the Strathyre Forest Cabins there is a cafe (seasonal) and the cycle route continues beyond a vehicle barrier and into the open countryside. Keep straight ahead when a track leaves to the left, there are good views over Loch Lubnaig. After a rise, bear right where another cycle track is joined to continue heading north.

Stage 5

Later the route turns right to descend towards the water to skirt the farm and buildings at Laggan before climbing again in a couple of wide zig zags and going through another gate/mini cattlegrid. Once through the trees, an elevated section now provides good views. After a vehicle barrier, pass a house down on the right (Kipp) and join a surfaced road. A bench on the left has a great view down Loch Lubnaig.

Stage 6

Pass most of the forestry houses at Sidheag before you take the right turn to stay on cycle route 7 (signed for Strathyre) and pass between the houses before curving left. Follow the path to the wooden suspension bridge and cross the River Balvag. Follow the cycle path as it bears left to head behind houses before emerging in the centre of Strathyre, the main road just to the right has a pub, shop and B&B.
