This enjoyable walk from Aberfoyle follows forest tracks out to an attractive loch with the unusual name of Lochan Spling.

Start from the main car park in Aberfoyle, at the end furthest from the Wool Centre. Turn left onto the minor road over the narrow old stone hump-backed bridge over the River Forth. After crossing the bridge, ignore the first track right and then a road ('Old Kirk Loan') into a housing estate, but take the next right hand turning, heading uphill.
The road passes several houses, with a particularly fine arts and crafts style house before it becomes a rougher forest track. Continue along it until a signposted junction; turn right here. At the next junction follow the track to the left, soon reaching the very attractive shores of Lochan Spling. There's a wooden bench overlooking the loch, whilst out in the water is a metal sculpture of a Pike.
The track continues beside the loch for an attractive stretch. Eventually it swings to the right away from the loch through the trees.
Soon it reaches a signed junction - turn left here, ignoring the right branch which is again signed for Inversnaid. Continue along the track, with some fine distant views to the west. Pass a barrier and then reach another t-junction; turn left here.
The track continues with more glimpses of Lochan Spling over to the left. The outward route is rejoined at a cross-tracks. Keep straight on, now retracting your steps back to Aberfoyle. It is possible to link this walk with the Doon Hill route for a longer walk if desired.
