River Garry, Invergarry no. 1

1. This route can be used as an approach to the Gleann Laogh and Allt na Calliche walks from Invergarry as well as being a fine short walk in its own right.. There is parking by the tiny post office on the A87(T) road (to Skye) in Invergarry. The walk begins just beyond the post office, where a signposted path (marked 'Tomdoun') on the left indicates the way down to an iron suspension bridge. This gives good views of the foaming river. Cross the bridge and turn right on the far side, along the river bank. Pass through a wrought-iron kissing gate. Immediately after this, you have a choice. You can either continue on a faint path along the river bank, which is rough in places, or can turn left and follow the field edge up to the minor road above (turning right there) – this route is easier and drier. The two routes join further on.

2. If continuing along the river bank, keep close to the river. There is a stony section at one point and the route crosses a couple of small streams using rocks. Pass through several gates, and continue fairly close to the river until you reach a post with wires leading across the water to a winding station. From here, head diagonally up the field to reach a gate at the far corner, where the minor road is joined (this is where the two routes join back up). Follow the road into the forest.

3. The road becomes a track and passes a picturesque little forester's cottage. Beyond it crosses a bridge; turn right at the junction just beyond. At the next junction, turn right on a track which ends at a turning area. Follow the red waymarker posts to a path which leads to the river bank next to two wooden bridges. Don't cross the bridges, but turn left along the river, passing some fine rapids. Ignore the waymarked trail coming in from the left, instead continuing by the river bank until you reach a track beside White Bridge.

4. Cross this bridge over the river, and turn right down the waymarked path which follows the far bank of the river back downstream. This path is very well maintained and passes through some lovely native woodland with many Scots' pine, though there are also invasive rhododendrons. Cross a small footbridge, and further on you will pass the winding station with wires over the river as mentioned earlier. Continue on the riverside path, crossing another bridge over a tributary, before reaching the iron suspension bridge near the start of the walk. Turn left up the path here to return to the post office.
