The Hill of Fare is an area of rough moorland rising above forest plantations a few kilometres north of Banchory. This route from the north gives the shortest and quickest ascent route - an out-and-back trip that is well worthwhile for the fine views.

Parking in disused quarry off B993.
Turn off the B993 onto the track on the south side at NJ650047, about 4km NE or Torphins; take the right fork to reach a disused quarry with space for parking several cars. The walk begins up the forestry track direct from the quarry, climbing up through commercial forestry plantations. Soon the track descends briefly before climbing once more and bending to the left. Near the top of Turk Wood a turning area is reached; continue through this, and then when the track bends left again leave it and take the path straight ahead.
The path soon climbs clear of the Scots Pines onto the heather moorland. It's a little muddy in places but clear to follow. Excellent views open up, first to the west, and then towards Bennachie and the Mither Tap to the north.
Once on the plateau the path joins with an old track. The summit plateau of the Hill of Fare is very flat, but you may spot the tiny summit cairn atop a rock is off over to the left. It's easy to miss the narrow path cuts off at NJ671028 to reach it.
Unless intent on a longer walk - perhaps a traverse joining with the southern approach - the best return is back the same way.
