A steep but short climb is rewarded with great views over the Tweed Valley and beyond on this pleasant route from Innerleithen.

There is a small car park on Hall St, on the right hand side, beyond the public toilets - turn off the High St (A72) at the crossroads with Traquair Road. From here start the walk by continuing a short way up Hall Street, away from the town centre, and turn left into St Ronan's Terrace. At the far end turn right to head up a track into the woods. St Ronan was the pilgrim monk who is said to have founded the town in 737AD. Once past the gate follow the main path ahead which climbs gently through the trees.
Follow the surfaced path as it reaches more open ground, bordered by gorse bushes. At a bench with a stone wall behind, where the path continues to the mast on the left, instead turn sharp right to head up the grassy path on the right hand side of the wall. The wide path climbs steadily with good views back over the Tweed Valley opening up behind.
Continue ahead as the path approaches a pine plantation and stay on the right hand side of this to cross a wall on a stile. Continue through fields usually containing sheep.
As a farm gate is approached the summit of Lee Pen comes into view. Cross the next field to climb the final, steeper, section of the hill.
The summit, at 502m, is a great viewpoint with the Moorfoot Hills to the north and the Tweed Valley laid out to the south with seemingly endless rolling hills beyond. It is possible to continue from here to Black Law, but our short route retraces steps back down the outward route to return to Innerleithen.
