Summary

This varied walk visits the picturesque Falls of Truim before following an old Right of Way through an area of sheep grazings, with good views of the Cairngorms mountains. It then leads through pleasant forestry for a circuit of Glen Truim Woods - including a climb to a high crag which is an excellent viewpoint.

Stage 1

Park at the (poorly maintained) Falls of Truim car park, just off the A9 signed for Crubenmore and Dalwhinnie; it is on the left side. From the car park backtrack a short way along the road towards the A9 and take the turning on the left for Crubenbeg. After a very short distance turn right through a kissing gate onto a path signed for the Falls of Truim; this runs parallel to the road. As you approach the falls you can take a short path down to the water, although there are better views from the other side of the river later on. Return to the road, cross the bridge over the river and then take the signed path on the right to follow the crags above the falls which have a lovely stand of pines above.

Stage 2

Follow the path past a bench. It forks several times - take the left option each time to head away from the river. The correct path ends at a gate. Pass through here, into an area of sheep grazings - it is best not to bring a dog during the spring lambing season. Cross the grass then turn right when a grassy track is reached. This leads to another gate. Pass through and then fork left, keeping near the fence and over another graass track to reach an old stone ruin. From here climb the muddy ramp up to the left to reach the back of Crudenbeg Steading. From here follow the track diagonally uphill with a fence on the left side.

Stage 3

Ignore a gate in a fence to your left, and instead continue uphill through the grassy field, rising around the hill on you rright, to eventually meet a metal gate by an old green Right of Way sign (for the route you have just walked). Pass through the gate and turn right, keeping the stone wall on your right and follow the grassy track next to it. The forestry of Glen Truim woods can be seen up ahead.

Stage 4

Follow the track to the edge of the plantations and go through a gate to continue straight ahead. Keep on the track, ignoring a turning to the right signed Glen Truim Woods. At the next signed junction just beyond take the track to the left signed for Truim Woods Viewpoint. This track takes you uphill towards the top of Creagan an Fhithich (the crag of the raven).

Stage 5

The track climbs round and eventually swings right to reach the open summit, where a cairn and bench enjoy truly superb views over Badenoch and towards the Cairngorms mountains.

Stage 6

Descend from the crag on the same track until you reach the junction with the main forestry track. Turn left and follow the track until it emerges at a road by a giant boulder. The boulder was placed here in 2014 to mark what has traditionally been regarded as the Centre of Scotland. Here you can detour very briefly to the left to look at the Shanvall Memorial, built in honour of Ewan Macpherson who led local men in the Jacobite uprising of 1746. Otherwise turn right when you reach the road and follow it until another forestry gate and track on the right is reached (the sign is missing).

Stage 7

Take this track, keeping right at a fork, and follow it all the way back to the junction with the outward route. Turn left at this junction and follow the outward route back to the Falls of Truim. Cross the bridge and walk back up the road to reach the parking area.
