Cranstackie is a very steep-sided quartzite mountain rising up from the wilderness of the far north. It is usually climbed with neigbouring Beinn Spionnaidh.

The route given above is the finest approach; it is possible to ascend the eastern flanks from near Polla on Loch Eriboll, but this side of the mountain has less character.
