Plean Country Park, Plean

Summary

Plean Country Park was once the grounds for the now ruined Plean House, a late 18th century mansion. Later the area was a centre for coal-mining, but the old bings have now been recolonised by nature. There are three waymarked walks through the woods here - this is the longest.

Stage 1

Start from the car park, where there is an information board giving details on the waymarked walks - ours is the longer, woodland route, marked orange on the map although the waymarkers look like a white leaf on a green background. There is also a bronze sculpture commemorating the history of mining here. Begin from the far end of the car park, left of the portable toilets. Turn right at a t-junction, then left when the path meets another surfaced one.

Stage 2

Soon turn right off this path (waymarker) onto a rougher one, then left after crossing a footbridge. After a second footbridge turn right, then following the path as it swings immediately left, running along the right side of a drystone dyke.

Stage 3

After a clearing the route passes through a gap to reach a walled lane; turn right along this. At the next t-junction, turn left. Keep ahead where a wooden sign indicates a branch of the horse trail off to the right. Take the next left, then turn immediately right onto a path through the trees.

Stage 4

The path passes a seat and then runs downhill just inside the edge of the woods. At the bottom of the hill turn right along a track through a leafy dell. Continue until a bench, then turn left opposite this onto a path climbing uphill (waymarker missing here). As it almost reaches the edge of the woods and a bungalow it turns left.

Stage 5

Keep left at a fork, then left once more when a t-junction is reached. Now keep straight ahead on the main path, ignoring three branches off to the left and one to the right. Eventually the path curves left to meet another, following this to the left.

Stage 6

Pass a bench and through a gateway, keeping straight ahead through a clearing. At the trees ahead turn right, then take the next left (waymarked) to head down to the track. Go right onto this, then immediately left to return to the car park.
