Tràigh Chornaig - The Green

Summary

This short walk heads from Loch Bhasapoll - often busy with people enjoying watersports - out to the beautiful and secluded beach of Tràigh Chornaig - also known as the Green - on the northern coast of Tiree.

Stage 1

There is a car park on the north side of Loch Bhasapoll at NL974474. The loch is often busy with people enjoying watersports - there is a centre here offering hire and courses. Begin the walk by heading west along the minor road.

Stage 2

A good track branches off to the right after 500m; turn along it, crossing the cattle grid. Continue along it, crossing another cattle grid and ignoring the fork off left to a croft. The track ends at a couple of whitewashed cottages. Turn right at the end of the fence (by the first cottage) to head to the coastline, just west of the main beach.

Stage 3

Turn right to soon reach Tràigh Cornaig (often called The Green). This magnificent sweep of finest shell sand, backed by dunes, must rank amongst the finest on Tiree - or, indeed, in the Hebrides.

Stage 4

Head three quarters of the way across the sand, just past the first lot of rocky ground breaking up the sand, then take the steep sandy path up the dunes to reach a pedestrian gate in the fence.

Stage 5

Pass through this and then head inland across the machair and grazings, aiming towards a house with bushes and a red phone box in the distance. As this is approached, pass in front of a whitewashed house (keeping it on your right) to go through a gate and join a track and follow this to a gate and the road beyond. Turn right along the road, following it past the school, to a t-junction. Turn right here to return to the start.
