Rising above the upper reaches of Strathconon, Bac an Eich is a neglected Corbett offering some fine views. The route described here uses stalkers' paths which loop around the mountain, avoiding the steepest slopes and ascending from the back.

Walk Description

Stage 1

There is a parking area at the end of the public road up Strathconon, on the north shore of Loch Beannacharain. Begin the walk by continuing along the private continuation of the road. Ignore a branch track off to the right (a right of way to Achnasheen), instead continuing past a cottage and below the Scots Baronial Scardroy Lodge.

Stage 2

Keep ahead when another two tracks fork off to the right, continuing to the house at Corrievuic. Follow the track to the left here, crossing a bridge over the River Meig, to reach the ruins at Corriefeol.

Stage 3

Head southwest from Corriefeol, crossing the Allt Coire na Feola (usually possible on stones) to pick up a stalkers' path. This continues across the southern flanks of the glen before curving round into Coire Mhoraigein.

Stage 4

The path is easy to follow, almost a track in places. It eventually zig-zags up the headwall of the corrie - taking a different line to that shown on the map - to reach the Drochaid Coire Mhadaidh. Leave the path on this featureless bealach to cross initially boggy ground and then easier though pathless ground leading uphill towards Bac an Eich.

Stage 5

The summit - marked by a stone-built trig pillar with a semi-circular wind-shelter - is an excellent viewpoint. The ground falls away quite steeply to the northeast and east, revealing a great view down Strathconon, whilst WNW are the great peaks of Torridon.

Stage 6

Descend southwards at an easy gradient, over ground which can be wet in places. An intermittent stalkers' path can be picked up which eventually cuts to the left and meets the larger stalkers path marked on 1:50k OS maps. Follow this down into the beautifully U-shaped Gleann Chorainn.

Stage 7

Once down to the floor of the glen the path becomes an intermittent grassy track and crosses to the west side of the burn. The track crosses the burn several times lower down, taking to the east side for the final time (could be a problem in spate) just before the plantations are reached. Not far beyond pick up a much clearer vehicle track. Continue down to Inverchoran.

Stage 8

Fork right just before the main house at Inverchoran, instead heading to a cottage. Turn left past the cottage to cross a bridge and join the main drive to the house below the private entrance. Follow the track up to the minor road, then turn left along it to follow it back to the start.
