Summary

Little Wyvis is very much in the shadow of its bigger neighbour. The ascent from Silverbridge follows landrover tracks for the ascent, making it one of the easier of the Corbetts; views are extensive.

Walk Description

Stage 1

Park at the car park (signed for public toilets) just off the A835 near the bridge over the Black Water 2km north Garve. From the car park take the footpath from near the entrance that heads across the old, double-arched stone bridge, with great views over the falls upriver. On the far side, ignore the path immediately off right and continue ahead until there's an opening onto the main road. Head straight across (care needed) and take the track opposite, signed for Silverbridge Lodge. Very soon a junction is reached; bear left here, passing through a gate and above an enclosed industrial area.

Stage 2

After about a kilometre the path becomes more open with younger trees. Climb more steeply, still close to the burn. Just over another kilometre uphill, the forest is completely left behind and open ground reached. An Cabar - the southwesternmost top of Ben Wyvis looks impressive on the left side of the glen, whilst Little Wyvis is more featureless on the right.

Stage 3

Eventually the track climbs towards a small area of woodland, reached through a gate. The track forks beyond this - bear left this time (the right branch leads to the mast referred to on previous signs). Climb through the trees, soon reaching the open hill once more via another gate. At the next junction beyond keep ahead, ignoring the track on the right that leads to the Bealach Beag.

Stage 4

The track soon swings right, and then back left. At the next junction ignore the lesser track ahead and turn right to continue on the main track zig-zagging up the steepest part of the climb. When the graident eases, ignore another track off left, then keep ahead where a track goes off right, passing a line of fenceposts. The track fades out as the summit cairn is approached. Suddenly the views expand in all directions, with nearby Ben Wyvis looking very fine,.

Stage 5

It's possible to head along the ridge and then drop to the track which runs along below the NW side of the summit ridge to make an alternate descent via a zig-zag - but this route is much boggier. Our recommended return is to retrace your steps.
