Walkhighlands expands into Galloway

We’ve now launched our coverage of Galloway, with 70 walks taking in the coast, hills, towns and villages of Galloway. Our coverage extends from the Mull of Galloway – the southernmost point of Scotland – all the way along the beautiful Solway Firth coastline to Annan near the border with England. Inland, we’ve routes in the rugged hills including The Merrick and all the other Corbetts in the area, as well as walks around the areas towns and villages, lochs, forests and wildlife reservers. Walkhighlands reaches Thistle Awards final

Walkhighlands is one of three businesses to reach the finals of VisitScotland’s Thistle Awards in the prestigious Innovation category. Created by VisitScotland in 1992, the Scottish Thistle Awards recognise and celebrate excellence in Scottish Tourism. Walkhighlands was nominated for the 2010 award for its social networking features developed over the last two years. Four new books from Walkhighlands’ founders

No less than four new books of moderate walks written by Walkhighlands’ Paul and Helen Webster have just been released. Published by Pocket Mountains, each covers 40 short to moderate length walks in a local area. The four new books cover Wester Ross and Lochalsh, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, Caithness and Sutherland, and Moray (including North Aberdeenshire). Walkhighlands celebrates 1,000th route

We are celebrating adding the 1,000 free walking route to Walkhighlands! The thousandth route was a fairly short jaunt up the the small but excellent hill of Norman’s Law in Fife. Paul and Helen decided to start the site during a year-long 4,000 mile walk across continental Europe. It was the experience of a lifetime – and convinced them to try to bring the pleasures of walking to a bigger audience. Scottish Marilyns now on Walkhighlands

Know your Marilyns from your Munros? Walkhighlands has now added all the Scottish Marilyns under 2000 feet so you can write trip reports and record them on your logger or bagger’s map. The Marilyns are the relative hills, those with 150 metres of descent all the way round and were devised by Alan Dawson. No one has yet claimed to have climbed them all. As well as plenty of popular hills such as Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh, the list also includes some difficult summits in St Kilda, such as Boreray, Stac Lee and Stac an Armin. Click here to go

Skye Photo Wins Landscape Prize

A stunning view over the Old Man of Storr on the Isle of Skye has taken the top prize in this year’s search to find the ‘Landscape Photographer of the Year’. Walkhighlands up for Tourism Awards

Walkhighlands has made the shortlist for this years Highlands and Islands Tourism Awards.  Up for Most Entrepreneurial Business, this is a new award for 2009. Also shortlisted in the same category are two of our advertisers. Active Outdoor Pursuits have a base in Newtonmore and offer a great range of activities including mountain guiding and kayaking, whilst Sonas Hospitality is the group behind the Toravaig and Duisdale Hotels on Skye, famed for their boutique style and fabulous food.  The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Inverness on 20 November. Walkhighlands expands into Aberdeenshire…

We’ve launched our initial coverage of Aberdeenshire. This new area of the site at present covers 27 walks around the coast from Portsoy through Banff and Buchan to the outskirts of Aberdeen, together with further routes including two routes on the very popular hill Bennachie. Parts of Aberdeenshire – notably Deeside upriver from Aboyne – are already covered in the Cairngorms National Park section. Aberdeenshire has alot to offer for outdoor enthusiasts with miles and miles of superb sandy beaches and dunes. The north coast also has some of Scotland’s most picturesque fishing villages.
