This shorter stretch of the Formartine and Buchan Way heads from the bus stop at Auchnagatt and leads on to Maud, where the Way divides in two.

There is a bus stop on the A948 at Auchnagatt, and parking at the community hall off the B9030. From just north of the bus shelter a blue cycle route sign 'Maud 4.5miles' indicates a path off to the right. Turn here and then immediately left to pick up the route of the old railway. This soon leads out into open countryside, although the traffic noise from the A948 easily carries on the first stretch. Pass near the farm at Cairncummer and under a minor road.
Further on the way crosses a couple of muddy farm tracks and makes a long, very gentle curve to the right. At one point it passes an old concrete linesmen's hut, and then a tiny whitewashed cottage.
A stile on the left at one point gives access to the rather grandly-named 'Grampian Forest' - a small plantation; but the Formartine and Buchan Way simply continues ahead, passing under another bridge. Eventually the route passes a pleasantly wooded section, and further on the distinctive building of Maud hospital comes into view over to the right.
Finally the way forks as the former Maud Station is reached. The cyclepath heads up left into the village by the shop and Station Hotel. If continuing the walk it matters little whether you take this option or continue on the old track bed, eventually emerging on the B9029 slightly further east. From here the Formartine and Buchan Way divides, with one section (slightly left on the road) bound eventually for Fraserburgh, and the other (directly ahead) for Peterhead.
