Brimmond Hill, near Westhill

Summary

This straightforward walk heads directly from a parking area up a good path to the summit of Brimmond Hill, before returning on a path round the sounthern slopes. Whilst Brimmond is bedecked with various masts and other paraphernalia, the cairned summit is just beyond and commands an excellent view over Aberdeen and the North Sea.

Walk Description

Stage 1

There are routes up Brimmond Hill from the north side (linking with Elrick Hill and from Kingswells to the southeast, but this route starts from a parking area on the minor road on the west side of the hill. A zig-zag path climbs steeply from the back of the parking area, heading up the gorse-covered slopes.

Stage 2

Stay on the main path, with with the biggest of the 5 radio masts near the summit appearing ahead. Bear right, aiming to pass just left of the mast complex. Here you'll meet a track. Before continuing to the summit cairn and flagpole ahead across the track, you can bear left to visit the war memorial, where a bronze view indicator is set in a stone enclosure. After visiting it, head to the cairn and trig point.

Stage 3

The reward for the ascent is the excellent view over Aberdeen to the North Sea. Rather than retracing your steps, continue on the path that descends beyond the cairn. This descends SSE, soon reaching a picnic table. Continue on the path beyond, ignoring an overgrown path that forks right.

Stage 4

When another path junction is reached turn right, then turn right again after 90m onto a path that leads back just above the trees. Ignore any further paths off left, following the main path and staying above the trees. Eventually a path from the hill joins from the right; keep left here, descending to another picnic table. Turn right here to head back to the start.
