This delightful short walk from Lumphanan village follows the line of an Old Military Road through mixed woodland, giving distant views out to the mountains of the Mounth.

The walk begins from Lumphanan; there is public parking at the park, adjacent to the school. Begin the walk by heading back along School Road to the main A980, turn right onto it and then right again onto Glen Road. This quiet lane leads gently uphill, with the Stothert Memorial Chapel prominent ahead. The road swings right below the chapel, but the walk continues ahead onto the green track signed for Tullochvenus.
The grassy track is an old military road, and runs through beautiful mixed woodland as it gently climbs along the eastern flank of the shallow glen of the Cloak Burn. After a little over a kilometre, turn sharp right through a pedestrian gate onto another grassy track.
The route winds through the woods before emerging at a clearing with a couple of benches - one of which is made entirely of horseshoes. There's a stunning view from here towards the Mounth, with the tor of Clachnaben prominent to the left, and Mount Keen to the right. Continue along the track as it heads back into the woods, eventually emerging at a minor road.
At the road turn right, then almost immediately turn left onto another track that descends and reaches a junction by some farm buildings. Ignore the first left, but take the next one straight after - soon passing to the left of a large metal barn. After another 700m there's a footbridge off right - cross this and follow a footpath along the line of the old railway - complete with old water laides - back towards Lumphanan. There are further footbridges. When the playing fields are reached, turn right through a gap in the fence to cross the fields back to the car park at the start.
