Fisherman's walk circuit, Brodick

Summary

This excellent walk runs from Brodick around the Bay to the fine sandy beach before reaching the entrance to Brodick Castle. It then returns via inland paths and country lanes, passing the Isle of Arran Cheese company and Arran Aromatics at Home Farm, and the Arran Heritage Museum. The walk can also be used as an approach to several other routes, including the usual route up Goat Fell and the circuit around the Brodick Castle Country Park.

Walk Description

Stage 1

The walk starts from the white co-op towards the north end of Brodick seafront; there is ample parking here. Begin by talking the path between the children's playground and the shore. It gives stunning views across Brodick Bay to the castle and Goatfell towering beyond.

Stage 2

Cross a footbridge over the Glencloy Water and skirt an area of salt marsh before crossing a corner of the golf course. Take the golf club footbridge across Glenrosa Water, and obey the large warning sign by turning sharply right to follow the river downstream.

Stage 3

The gorse-lined path leads alongside the golf course for a short distance before offering access to Brodick's north beach. Continue north along the golf course (being aware of wayward golf balls). Later signs direct you onto the fine sandy beach, to eventually reach the third footbridge across Cnocan Water.

Stage 4

Turn around to steal a last look at Brodick Bay laid out before you, then cross the wooden bridge into a patch of woodland to reach the car park alongside the A841 road. This is the start point for the Glen Rosa, Goatfell and Brodick Castle Country Park walks - any of which can be combined with this one.

Stage 5

Cross the road and take the track to the right of the bistro, curving behind it to pass an outdoor shop and the Arran Brewery. Take the main Goatfell path in the far corner and follow this as it ascends up into the woodland. Ignore a path off right, but take a path off left ( purple marker) just beyond. Take this path through the trees; soon it crosses a wooden footbridge, then another footbridge at the foot of a gorge.

Stage 6

Turn right on the far bank. When the path emerges at the castle access road, turn left along it. The road soon bends left, and continues as an elegant beech-lined avenue. After 400m or so there are a series of gaps in the hedge - step through these to view the small standing stones, one over in the field to the left of the road, and two on the right. The craggy grandeur of Glen Rosa beyond offers a fitting backdrop. When a junction is reached turn left onto a track.

Stage 7

The track leads past an attractive pond; keep right at a fork. It then emerges on the main road opposite the Arran Cheese shop and Arran Aromatics. Turn right along the pavement, following the road as it bends to the right. When a cycle path sign is reached cross the road and turn left to take this path. It soon crosses a footbridge and reaches the road again, this time alongside the Arran Heritage museum.

Stage 8

Turn left briefly along the main road - passing a grander standing stone - before turning left on a path adjacent to a parking area and bus stop. The path rejoins the outward route at the footbridge on the golf course; do not cross the Glenrosa Water bridge, instead turning right to retrace your steps to Brodick.
