Summary

This enjoyable circuit links Arran's two largest villages - the capital, Brodick, and beautiful Lamlash. The route heads out around the coastline before returning via a cycle path next to the road and then an old track through the wooded Fairy Glen.

Walk Description

Stage 1

Start from the Brodick Ferry Terminal and walk past the Tourist Information Office and turn left along the A841 road (south) uphill. Take the left turn signposted Strathwhillan. Follow the road past several houses, until a stile on the right with a footpath sign. Turn right over the stile, heading uphill with a fence on your left. After just under 100m up the field go left through a gap in the trees. At the far corner of the next field, turn right. As height is gained, there are stunning views looking back across Brodick Bay.

Stage 2

Go left over a stile at a signpost. Keep straight ahead across the next field to another stile, then ahead again to a stile and gate. Beyond this the path doglegs left and right (signposts) to emerge on a country lane or track. Turn left down this.

Stage 3

The track eventually passes some cottages and leads down to the shore; keep right at the shore. Pass the seaward side of any buildings, and then leave the track for an ill-defined path (Arran Coastal Way sign) that keeps round the wet grass at the back on the bay. Beyond this the walk continues along the coast, crossing some rather marshy ground.

Stage 4

Eventually the path crosses a stile and becomes clearer. Stepping stones help ease the route across another wet section. Further on the going becomes drier as the path continues through a mix of grass and boulders above the shore.

Stage 5

Ignore a path off to the right (up Dun Fionn) and continue instead on the ever improving path to reach Clauchlands Point where it meets a track. There are stunning views ahead now to Holy Island - best enjoyed from a nearby seat on the point. To continue the walk, follow the track as it continues by the shore.

Stage 6

The track becomes a coast road; follow it past the outdoor centre and into the edges of Lamlash Bay - perhaps the most beautiful of Arran's villages. Continue until the road meets the main A841 and then turn right up this; there is a pavement on the far side. The pavement ends outside the Lamlash Golf Club but is quickly replaced by a good path running parallel to the road. Follow this path as it crosses a footbridge before veering slightly away from the road into the forest.

Stage 7

After 1.5km a small carpark is reached. Cross the lane to this and take the footpath off on the far side, signed for 'Brodick'. This path soon reaches a small forestry car park with a view indicator identifying the peaks of the Goatfell range.

Stage 8

Turn left and follow the path into an area of mature woodland known as Fairy Glen. The path leads down to a footbridge. Continue ahead, ignoring a path off left and two off right. Continue through the trees, eventually reaching a tarmac road with tracks off both left and right - keep straight ahead down the road here.

Stage 9

Further down the road, turn left at a t-junction and follow the road to emerge on the main road running along Brodick seafront. Turn right here to head towards the Ferry Terminal.
