The walk begins through attractive woodlands overlooking the Firth of Tay before returning along an old country lane. Leave time to visit the ruins of Balmerino Abbey.

Balmerino is reached via minor roads, just west of Wormit on the Firth of Tay. There is limited parking on the road outside the Abbey; the ruins date from 1229 can be visited on the right, there are also picnic tables in the grounds. From here walk down the road into the hamlet of Balmerino, looking out for a waymarker post indicating the Fife Coastal Path turning left.
The path soon leads to the pebble shores of the tidal Firth of Tay. Continue across these until the path heads up steps and then continues through the woods above the shores. There are good spots to watch for herons and wading birds. The path meanders through the trees crossing a number of small ravines on footbridges.
Keep on the main path through the trees, eventually gaining a little height to be higher above the Tay. Eventually the path leads through a dense section pinewood before bearing left at a wooden fence. Continue on the waymarked path, passing a signpost and leaving the woods along the edge of a field. Continue straight ahead next to a beech hedge to reach a track.
Turn left along the track. It soon passes the farmhouse buildings at Thornton. Continue along the track, with good views across the Tay to Dundee. When the road is reached by the cottages at Byres turn left along it. At the junction with the bus stop turn left to soon pass the ornate Wedderburn Memorial Cottages set out in a half-square. The abbey ruins can be visited on the right.
