Largo Law, from Upper Largo

Summary

Largo Law - the eroded plug of an ancient volcano - rises sharply above the farmland and fields of eastern Fife. It is a superb viewpoint, though the ascent is very steep. A sign advises that dogs are not permitted on the hill by the farmer between March to November (due to the presence of cattle), and should be kept on a lead / under close control due to sheep at other times.

Walk Description

Stage 1

The walk starts from a parking area between the school and the cemetery in Upper or Kirkton of Largo, on North Feus - this is reached by turning up a lane signed for 'Church Cemetery Largo' from the main road. Note the signs about dogs here. The walk begins through the kissing gate, running alongside the cemetery at first on a grassy path / track, with the steep slopes of Largo Law dominating to the left.

Stage 2

Pass through a gate and continue towards Chesterstone Farm. At a junction of tracks keep right (signed Largo Law) and then as the farm is reached turn left to pass round the back of the huge barn. At the far corner another sign for Largo Law indicates a grassy track on the left, heading directly towards the hill. This section can become increasingly muddy underfoot.

Stage 3

At the end of the track continue straight ahead up the eroded path which tackles the slope head on. The going is very steep, and the path is often muddy and hence slippery; once clear of the gorse bushes the grass can help with grip. Higher up there is releif as the slope begins to ease, enabling appreciation of the ever-improving views. East Lomond can be seen to the west, but it is the outlook back over the Firth to Forth to the Bass Rock, North Berwick Law and Edinburgh that is the highlight. From the bald grassy dome of the southern top the trig point on the true summit is revealed across a dip beyond.

Stage 4

Follow the path down into the dip to reach a stile over a fence - the surrounding ground is very boggy here. Continue up the slope beyond to reach the trig point, with a cairn nearby on the west side. This is a great place from which to admire the surrounding patchwork farmland and coastline of this part of Fife.

Stage 5

Note the plug of Craig Rock to the east - the remnant of a side vent from the volcano. The return walk should be made by reversing the outward route. The descent of the path down the steep southern front is slippery and requires care.
