Summary

Leum Uilleim would be a very remote hill were it not for Corrour Station - without arriving by train the ascent would be an epic. From the station, however, it gives a short and very rewarding hillwalk; the position north of Rannoch Moor making it a superb viewpoint.

Walk Description

Stage 1

Begin the walk from the remote railway station at Corrour. From the north end of the platform use the crossing to reach the west side of the railway. Almost immediately a junction is reached; ignore the rights of way to the right (signed for Fort William, Kinlochleven and Spean Bridge) and instead continue ahead. The surface soon gives way to an old stalkers' path.

Stage 2

The path is initially good but becomes wet in places; for a clockwise circuit, choose a good place to leave it and strike southwest across the very boggy moorland towards the foot of the ridge that leads up onto Sròn an Lagain Ghairbh. The ridge gives drier going, with a steep pull for a time and great views back over Loch Ossian.

Stage 3

The ridge eventually levels off and the views really open out, with Ben Nevis clearly visible flanked by the Mamores and the Grey Corries, whilst the great empty sweep of Rannoch Moor extends to the south.

Stage 4

The massive summit cairn reveals even better views towards the great peaks around Glencoe.

Stage 5

Continue west down fairly gentle slopes to a bealach below Beinn a' Bhric. It is possible to bypass this minor summit by following an ATV track that cuts north across its slopes to gain the ridge beyond it. The broad ridge then gives superb walking as it leads over Tom an Eoin, with views ahead over both Loch Ossian and Loch Treig.

Stage 6

Further down the going starts to become wetter once more. From An Diollaid there are two options; aim east to meet the old stalkers' path, or continue along the ATV track down the ridge. Either way, the going becomes very wet in places. The stalkers' path crosses a burn, whilst the ATV track eventually becomes surfaced and has a bridge. A good track then leads back to Corrour.
