Park at the community hall in Carronbridge; it is on the east side of the A76 opposite a bus shelter. Begin the walk by turning left (south) along the A76 towards the centre of the village. Immediately before reaching the bridge over the Carron, turn right along a lane past a row of cottages.
When the tarred lane bends to the left, go straight ahead on a track. This curves to the right when a plantation is reached, then bends left at the far edge. There are views across the fields to Drumlanrig Castle.
After a gate the banks of the River Nith are reached. Turn left on a grassy path through the oaks alongside the river, heading downstream.
Continue along the river until the confluence with the much smaller Carron is reached. Turn left here, heading upstream along the Carron until a metal footbridge on the right. Cross this, then head across the grass to the gate straight ahead.
Now follow the tarred lane past the house, with Carron Mill seen on the left. Continue along the tarred lane until the main A76 is reached. Cross with care and then turn left along the pavement on the far side. After a short distance cross back to the near side pavement, and rejoin the outward route in the centre of Carronbridge. Continue up the A76 to return to the start.
