Crichope Linn, near Thornhill

Summary

This dramatic hidden ravine - spelt Chrichope on some maps - was once a renowned showplace, but it is now neglected and almost forgoten, its many footbridges long since removed. This short circular walk explores the gorge before returning along tracks and minor roads.

Stage 1

The path into Crichope Linn is marked by a public right of way sign for Beattock via Kinnelhead and Long Cairn; there is a small parking area 100m north on the opposite side of the road. Begin by turning into the woods at the sign, heading up steps and through a gate. The path leads through the trees, soon passing to the right of a crag. The gorge below soon narrows and care is needed. The path forks as a natural rock arch comes into view head; the route up the Linn takes the left path, but first head to the arch.

Stage 2

From the archway there is the best view up the Linn and, in less dry conditions, a waterfall, but take care and go no further as this is a dangerous place The rock is carved with old (and sadly some newer) graffiti. After enjoying the drama, return to the last path junction and turn right to head up above the gorge.

Stage 3

The path becomes increasingly rough as it continues up the glen; take great care as it is very narrow in places and there are further sections with vertical drops. All the footbridges shown on some OS maps have long since been removed. Eventually the path leaves the burn and heads left up to a curious iron stile over a gate that doesn't open. Cross this and then turn right along the track, passing through a gate.

Stage 4

At a t-junction with another track, turn right. The track soon becomes a minor road. Ignore a road off left and continue until a junction opposite a white cottage. Turn right here to return to the entrance to the Linn, with the parking area just beyond.
