Park on the main street in Drummore, where 'Scotland's most southerly Post Office' and 'Scotland's most southerly Stores' face each other across the road. Begin the walk by heading uphill away from the harbour, and at the top of the street turn right (for Kirkmaiden). As the road climbs up away from the village there are good views northwards along the coastline of the Rhins.
The road leads past a fine stonebuilt farmhouse and then the large graveyard and the seventeenth century Kirkmaiden Church. Once the main road is reached turn left along it through the hamlet, but soon turn right by the telephone box onto a very minor road, complete with grass growing along the centre. This is followed past High Currochtrie at which point the road begins to descend and a view opens up of the sea on the west side of the Rhins.
Continue along the road to the junction at Low Clanyard. The scant remains of Castle Clanyard stand in a field on the right, but the walk continues by turning left on the concrete track to Castle Clanyard Farm. Bear left at the farm to follow what is now an old grassy track as it climbs across the flanks of Cairn Fell, eventually emerging at another minor road.
There are excellent views from this point. Turn left along the minor road which descends to meet the main road once more, a short distance south of Kirkmaiden. Turn right along the verge for around 500m. Just after passing an entrance to a farm on the right and a whitewashed cottage on the left, turn left onto a grassy track. The track curves right and follows a field edge to reach and pass High Kildonan, then bends left and continues down to rejoin the outward route on the road just above Drummore. Turn right to return to the village and then left to head back downhill to the start.
