There is parking outside the shops near the harbour on the coast road from the roundabout. The harbour area of Port William is worth a short detour. Otherwise return to the roundabout and cross the Whithorn road to some old mill buildings. Here a sign points to the Garnets Walk and heads up a track to the left of the mill buildings.
As the green lane rises and passes the recreation field on the left, there are good views of the surrounding countryside and of the coast. The raised beaches of the Machars coast which were created thousands of years ago when the ending of the last Ice Age caused the land to rise, can be seen looking north. This is also a good place to spot birds, butterflies and the occasional hare.
Keep straight ahead at a junction and pass the water tower which used to supply Port William. Eventually the green lane bends sharp right at a bench, follow it to reach a minor road. Turn right here to cross a bridge and pass a wood with a rookery on the left. The road now heads in a straight line, passing farm buildings to reach the main road at the outskirts of Port William. Turn right here, soon picking up the pavement outside the primary school. Follow the road down the hill to return to the harbour area at the start.
