Scafell
Scafell may be overtopped by nearby Scafell Pike but nevertheless it is the grandest mountain in England and the magnificent Scafell Crag is also the country's finest. The crag is celebrated as a rock-climbing mecca but there are routes for adventurous walkers and scramblers here too. The direct descent from Scafell to the ridge linking with the Pike should be avoided unless the party has rock-climbing skills as it includes the dangerous descent of Broad Stand.
