An Stùc was promoted to Munro status in 1997 and is the steepest and sharpest of the Ben Lawers range. When approaching from Meall Garbh the ascent is extremely steep, exposed and loose.

The route given can easily by extended to take in Ben Lawers, descending initially down its eastern ridge. An Stùc could be climbed from the Ben Lawers car park, though unless intent on a traverse you would need to climb right back over Ben Lawers.

The biggest bagging route hereabouts is a circuit of the 7 Lawers Munros as part of a horseshoe round the Allt a' Chobhair from Camusvrachan in Glen Lyon.
