Legal challenge to beaver trapping

An order to trap escaped beavers in Tayside may be challenged in the courts by a newly-formed campaign group. The Scottish Wild Beaver Group, formed in January 2011 to lobby for the survival in the wild of beavers in East Perthshire, said the order by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) to re-capture the beavers could breach EU law. SNH ordered the trapping of beavers in the Tay river system last November after up to 20 beavers were believed to have escaped from private collections in Angus and Perthshire and have been living and breeding in the wild. Ben Attow trip scoops monthly prize

February may be the shortest month of the year, but there was no shortage of walk reports entered in Walkhighlands.co.uk monthly trip reports competition. 189 reports of walks were posted publicly on the site with everyone in with a chance to win a total of £90 worth of prizes from online outdoor gear retailer Webtogs. This months winner, and £60 to spend at Webtogs, goes to Yokehead. He put in a stack of quality reports, choosing just one was difficult. Fersit bridge closure affects hillwalkers

Hillwalkers wanting to access hills from the village of Fersit near Roy Bridge are warned that Inverlair Bridge will be closed until midnight on 6 March. Although a temporary pedestrian bridge and shuttle bus will be provided, there will not be sufficient parking on the Roy Bridge side of the closed bridge for visitors. Fersit is the starting point for the hills of Stob Coire Sgriodain, Chno Dearg and Stob Coire Easain and Stob a’Choire Mheadhoin.

Mountain Leader Training Course launched

Are you involved with taking the lead as part of your walking or mountaineering club days out? The MCofS are offering members the opportunity to apply for a place on a Summer Mountain Leader Training Course (SMLTB) which will run over two long weekends in September. Trump tripped up over homes purchase

Campaigners look to have scored a great victory as Donald Trump has declared that he will not use compulsory purchase powers to clear residents of Menie from their homes. The Press and Journal has reported that after almost two years of uncertainty, Trump has said he will not use attempt to use compulsory powers to purchase four homes as part of his plans for his golf resort on the Aberdeenshire coastline. A new promotional film featuring Sir Jimmy Savile undertaking a range of hair raising extreme sports is proving to be an internet sensation. Closer inspection of the film, produced for Outdoor Capital, to promote the Fort William and Lochaber area, shows that top sportsmen have taken the role of Sir Jimmy for the more taxing activities. Kilted skiers wanted for record breaking attempt

Cairngorm Mountain is calling on skiers and snow boarders to pull on their kilts for another record breaking, fund raising attempt in 2011. Last year 235 skiers and boarders took part in the record breaking attempt and this year the aim is to get over 400 kilts sliding down CairnGorm Mountain in aid of Maggie’s Highland and The Local Schools Skiing Programme. Forestry Commission Scotland is calling all community groups, events organisers, countryside rangers, furniture makers, artists and timber architects to apply for a new range of grants. Extra weapons in fight against wildlife crime

The fight against wildlife crime has been strengthened by a dedicated grant scheme which has seen a range of projects supported. Funding under the Partnership for Action against Wildlife Crime (PAW) Scotland have been used for new and innovative schemes based on prevention, intelligence, and enforcement to tackle wildlife crime throughout Scotland Three of the successful projects are set to be discussed at the Scottish police wildlife crime conference at the Scottish Police College, Tulliallan, Perthshire, today (Wed 23 February). Lochaber woman to tackle 3 UK Mountain Rounds

Glencoe-based Keri Page is planning to undertake a solo walk of the UK’s 3 big mountain rounds in one go. The charity challenge which will raise funds for the John Muir Trust and WaterAid, will take in the Bob Graham Round (England), the Paddy Buckley Round (Wales) and the Ramsay Round (Scotland).
