Outer Hebrides walkers' help needed on path survey

As the number of people visiting and walking in the Outer Hebrides increases each year, walkers there are being asked to help record the state of the local footpaths. The WISE (Western Isles Support for the Environment) Volunteering Project aims to improve and maintain local footpaths and this summer is asking visitors to help it out by completing a survey to build up a picture of the condition of footpaths and their use.

WISE says that the surveys are simple and ask for comments on sign posting, drainage, stiles and the general condition under foot. The surveys will be distributed the survey throughout various tourist spots.

Over the summer the organisation aims to hold regular volunteers meeting once a month to carry out the work and visitors will be very welcome at these events. So if you are planning a visit or already live on the islands and want to take part heck out the group’s Facebook page, email or phone on 01870 602604 for more information on the work groups.

The Outer Hebrides has some fantastic coastal, mountain, and countryside walks, for full descriptions including free OS mapping, directions, GPS and photos check out the selection at Walkhighlands.

You should always carry a backup means of navigation and not rely on a single phone, app or map. Walking can be dangerous and is done entirely at your own risk. Information is provided free of charge; it is every walker's responsibility to check it and to navigate safely.
