Walkhighlands members take top awards

Three advertising members of Walkhighlands have picked up prestigious gongs at the annual Highlands and Islands Tourism Awards. The Glenview – based on the Trotternish peninsula on the Isle of Skye – has built a strong reputation for delicious locally-sourced food and friendly service. The Restaurant with Rooms won the award for Best Restaurant / Cafe in the Highlands and Islands. Beinn a'Chlaidheimh demotion sees Munro list down to 282

The Scottish Mountaineering Club (SMC) have confirmed that Beinn a’Chaidheimh has been demoted from Munro to Corbett status, in a story broken by Dave Hewitt on Grough, which has been confirmed to Walkhighlands by the SMC. This follows a survey carried out by the Munro Society back in August last year, which found that height of the hill to be 913.96m, just short of the 914.4m needed for Munro status. Use of GPS and Smartphones for hillwalking

Following a recent spate of mountain rescues and a warning from two Scottish Police forces that walkers need to be properly equipped and should not rely entirely on GPS or Smartphone apps for navigation, Walkhighlands has issued some frequently asked questions. Deer stalking info for hillwalkers online

Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) is advising hill walkers to check online about deer stalking on estates before heading out for the hills. The stag stalking season (1st July to 20th October) is a popular time of year for walkers, so three years ago SNH set up the Heading for the Scottish Hills website. The web service has proved popular with walkers with 7500 visits last year. Three more great trails for Scotland

Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) has announced that three new trails have been added to the national network of long distance routes, known as Scotland’s Great Trails. The recently-completed Berwickshire Coastal Path and the Great Glen Canoe Trail join the Rob Roy Way to bring the total number of routes in the network to 23. Co-inciding with the launch of Walkhighlands’ coverage of the Rob Roy Way, the national trail network now extends to over 1500 miles of walking and paddling route.
