10,000th member joins Walkhighlands

Despite the promising weather luring many people out onto the hills, this Easter Monday saw the 10,000th member sign up to the Walkhighlands forum. Only a couple of years ago the site, which is now Scotland’s busiest outdoors website, was celebrating its 1000th member. Borders long distance walks mapped out

Walker’s website Walkhighlands has added two more long distance routes in the Scottish Borders. Full descriptions, OS mapping, GPS downloads and photos are now available free of charge for the Borders Abbeys Way and the St Cuthbert’s Way. The Scottish Borders are famed for their magnificent ruined abbeys at Melrose, Dryburgh, Jedburgh, and the more ruinous Kelso. Ayrshire Coastal Path on Walkhighlands

The Ayrshire Coastal Path is the latest route to be added to the Walkhighlands website. The addition of a detailed route description, complete with 1:250,00 Ordnance Survey mapping, photos and GPS downloads means the site now boasts over 1300 Scottish walking routes. Walkhighlands launches new IKEA walk

Today Walkhighlands has finally added coverage of perhaps the most popular weekend walk in all Scotland, the route around IKEA in Glasgow. National Nature Reserve walks highlighted

There are over fifty National Nature Reserves (NNRs) in Scotland which are some of the best places for wildlife spotting in the country. It is now possible to search the 1300 routes on Walkhighlands to find walks in these Reserves. NNR’s are managed primarily for nature, but people are welcome too, many have facilities to enable visitors to appreciate the wildlife living there. Southern Upland Way on Walkhighlands

Scotland’s longest long distance walk, the Southern Upland Way, is now featured on Walkhighlands.co.uk. The route was walked for Walkhighlands by outdoor writer, Chris Townsend, who also used the challenge of the weather and the terrain to test out some walking and camping gear.
