Bid to buy Southern Uplands estate fails

Conservation charities have failed in their attempt to buy what they described as the 'wild heart' of the Southern Uplands. The John Muir Trust (JMT) and the Borders Forest Trust had hoped to purchase the Talla and Gameshope Estate. After the 5,000 acre estate was put on the open market with an asking price of £1.1m, the two organisations launched a public appeal to help raise funds. However it is now understood that the charities have been outbid and that their “race against time” to save the heart of the historic Ettrick Forest, which once provided sanctuary to William Wallace

Woodland visitors asked to protect Kiltarlity pines

Anyone visiting woodland around the Kiltarlity and surrounding areas to the north of Loch Ness, is being asked not to take any tree foliage, branches, or twigs away with them, in a bid to help guard against a potential threat to Scotland’s pine forests. The call comes as Forestry Commission Scotland continues to work with landowners, foresters and conservationists to take a sensible, risk-based approach to the management of a localised population of the Pine tree lappet moth, the caterpillars of which have sometimes been known to cause large-scale damage to pine plantations in some parts of continental Europe. Walkers urged to to take extra care this Spring

As spring approaches, Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) is urging walkers and cyclists to be aware of vulnerable birds and animals. Lambs and ground nesting birds are particularly vulnerable in spring, so SNH is asking dog walkers, cyclists, hill walkers, and anyone enjoying the outdoors to be particularly careful. To reinforce this message, SNH is launching a campaign this week which includes radio adverts, press adverts, and leaflet drops. The campaign emphasizes the Scottish Outdoor Access code, promoting responsible access and how to enjoy the outdoors responsibly, and also includes mail-outs to dog walking companies, vets, and digital ads on walking
