Last call for female GPS courses

Only a few places remain on the first series of woman only GPS training courses to be run by the Mountaineering Council of Scotland and Chicks Unleashed. The one day course will begin with a short (approx 1 hour) introduction session indoors for participants to familiarise themselves with the GPS units. This will be followed by practical sessions in the woods around Glenmore and later out on the hill. The courses are based at Glenmore Lodge, Aviemore and cost £25 for the day. Kintail MRT to cycle 1,200 miles

Like others in Scotland, Kintail Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) is a charity made up of a team of dedicated volunteers. They are currently based in Morvich in part of an old croft house and garage, but increasing demand for their services mean they are now trying to raise money to build a purpose built base. To raise funds, members of the team will attempt to cycle from Morvich to the four cardinal points of mainland Scotland. 4th Nature Photography Competition open for entries

Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) wants to find out what moves people about their photos of Scotland’s spectacular nature. The fourth annual Nature Photography Competition is now underway, looking for pictures showing-casing animals, plants or landscapes across Scotland. This free contest is run by SNH and celebrates Scottish Biodiversity Week, which runs from 15 to 23 May. This year’s theme is ‘Emotions’. Spyke – the odyssey continues

Stephen Pyke’s non-stop Munro record attempt should now have entered its 10th day. The last couple of days have seen epic numbers of Cairngorm Munros ticked off during which Spyke has had to deal with snow on the ground and periods of snowstorms which added to the difficulty of the run. Spyke’s 40 day Munro attempt going well

It’s day 5 of Stephen Pyke’s (aka Spyke) epic attempt to climb all the Munros in under 40 days all under his own steam. Starting off on Sunday 25 April, Spyke has already tackled Ben More on Mull, the quick ascent and descent being followed by a cycle ride and then kayak to the mainland and more cycling before bagging the Glenfinnan Munros. Corrour Station House to reopen as SYHA

Remote Corrour Station House, on the West Highland Line, is to re-open this Friday as a Scottish Youth Hostel Association hostel. Previously the building which is right next to the railway station at Corrour, operating as an independent hostel and cafe. Now the hostel will be run in conjunction with nearby Loch Ossian hostel which was given an eco-makeover in 2003 but has limited capacity. Last chance for say on Loch Lomond wild camping

The consultation on the proposed ban on wild camping along a section of the east shore of Loch Lomond has entered its final week. The Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park Authority says that it has already received over 250 responses to its proposals and is keen for interested people to use the final days until 3 May to have their say. the proposal will see a new byelaw introduced that will ban wild camping along the east side of the Loch between Drymen and Rowardennan. Family sought for lonely Juniper

The sole surviving juniper plant at the National Trust for Scotland’s Ben Lomond is set to get a family, thanks to the efforts of the conservation charity. Once more widespread in the area, there is now only one juniper (Juniperus communis) bush remaining on this popular mountain, and only a handful of plants are still present in the wider Loch Lomondside area. Elie Chain Walk Closed

The dramatic coastal Chain Walk at Elie in Fife has been closed due to extensive vandalism. Fife Council, which maintains the route, says that about two thirds of the chains have been stolen. The chains are a necessary part of the scramble which provides a low-tide exciting route around Kincraig Head near Elie. In many places the route relies on chains to allow walkers to stay on the small rock-cut steps and avoid a dangerous slip onto rocks or into the sea below. No less than four new books of moderate walks written by Walkhighlands’ Paul and Helen Webster have just been released. Published by Pocket Mountains, each covers 40 short to moderate length walks in a local area. The four new books cover Wester Ross and Lochalsh, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, Caithness and Sutherland, and Moray (including North Aberdeenshire).
